Molzahn Leaves Reader

After 21 years as a staff editor, and barely three months after she took over as theatre assignment editor, Laura Molzahn is leaving The Reader.

“I’m leaving as a staffer. I want to keep writing as a freelancer,” said Molzahn, who edited many of The Reader’s art stories and listings and has written about both dance and theatre.

Molzahn’s last day is Jan. 22. She made clear that she was not leaving due to layoffs, that her position was one The Reader wanted to keep. Reader editor Alison True confirmed that Molzahn will be replaced, but there is no confirmation as to whether she’ll be replaced by the time she leaves.

Since the sale of The Reader last July, staffers have been dealing with layoffs and an increase in workload to remaining staffers. Molzahn wouldn’t say specifically why she’s leaving now.

“It’s complicated, but it’s just time to get out,” she said.

“There’s more work; it’s no one’s fault, it’s just the economics of the situation. I love The Reader. I respect what they’ve done and what they’re still trying to do.”
