Moreau, Cabaret Take (Most) Jeffs
BY Carrie L. kaufman
The 2007/2008 Non-Equity Jeffs proves that the sum of the
parts do not always make the whole. The big winners for the night were
Lifeline’s The Island of Dr. Moreau, which took five Jeffs, and Theo Ubique’s Cabaret,
which took four. As befits the biggest single winner, Moreau also took home the
Outstanding Production – Play award. But the second biggest single winner—Cabaret—did
not win the Outstanding Production – Musical award. That category was split
between Bailiwick’s Jerry Springer-The Opera, which won one other Jeff, and
Signal Ensemble’s 1776, which won no other awards than the top one.
Other than Moreau, Cabaret and Springer, the only other show
to win multiple Jeffs was Teatro Luna’s Machos, which won for ensemble and new
work. Raven, Circle and Bohemian theatres all won a Jeff each for two different
shows.
Raven’s founders, Michael Menendian and JoAnn Montemurro
received this year’s special Non-Equity Jeff.
