New Rules Give Marriott and Chicago Dramatists Equal Treatment for Jeff Awards
BY Carrie L. Kaufman

The sets and costumes helped Marritt's Les Mis get nine nominations...
The Equity Jeffs have split themselves in two. That is to say,
in seven different categories, theatres will be judged in two separate
tiers—large and midsize. This is acknowledgement of the production values that
big budget sets and lights and costumes and sound bring to larger theatres. No
longer are they judging a $20,000 set against a $1,000 one.
So, starting with the Equity Jeff nominations, which are out
today, large and midsize theatres will have separate categories for Production-Play,
Production-Musical, Production-Revue, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting
Design and Sound Design. All of the other categories—the acting, writing and
directing ones—will all be tossed in the same pot.
Stirring the larger pot this year is Marriott Theatre, with 19
Jeff nominations. That includes Nine nominations alone for Les Misérables, and eight for The Producers. Their productions
of Little Women and The Full Monty got two and one
nod, respectively.
Coming up right behind Marriott are Chicago Shakespeare
Theatre and The Goodman. Both had five shows nominated, though Chicago
Shakespeare came out one ahead—16 go 15.

...but Chicago Dramatists' Cadillac has a fighting chance for big awards in its own category.
In the midsize tier, Shattered Globe and Chicago Dramatists
are leading the pack. Shattered Globe’s 10 nominations came from their productions
of Requiem for a Heavyweight
(7) and Suddenly Last Summer (3).
Chicago Dramatists’ is showing its maturity by the number of nominations it’s
getting outside of the New Work categories. Their production of Cadillac got five nominations,
while the long-running A Steady
Rain got four. Both of those shows were nominated for best play.
As for individuals, both Mike Tutaj and Nick Sandy’s were
nominated for multiple awards in different categories. Tutaj has four
nominations for sound and projection designs; Sandys has three, one for acting
and two for fight choreography. Other multiple nominees are Jim Corti, Brian
Sydney Bembridge, Kevin Hagan, Nancy Missimi and John Horan.
There were a total of 83 nominations to 31 theatre companies.
The Equity Jeff Awards will be Monday, Oct. 20 at the North
Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Tickets in advance are $75, or
$55 for stage union members. Go to www.jeffawards.org to get tickets.
